As reported on BBC World News on Saturday, August 11, there are now 28 million people - yes, 28 million – who have been affected by the South Asia Floods. It has been raining heavily in Bangladesh and Nepal for more than 20 days. In Assam, in north-eastern India, three feet of rain fell in July. Some rivers have seen their levels rise nine or 10 meters, swamping embankments and submerging huge tracts of land. Millions of people have been stranded or forced to leave their homes. The TV camera showed frightened families huddled together on their roof tops, one clinging to their goat, their only remaining possession. The risk of the outbreak of malaria and dengue fever due to stagnant water and poor sanitation is very high.
