Low pressure formed over Bay of Bengal
Statesman News ServiceBhubaneswar, Aug 12: Incessant rains lashed several parts of Orissa as a well-marked low pressure area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal off the Orissa-West Bengal coast, Met officials said today.
The system was likely to concentrate into a depression with officials warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy falls (over 24 cm) in isolated places over the state during the next two days.
Rain or thundershower had been forecast over most places in Orissa.
As a consequence, squally surface wind in a westerly direction with speed reaching 45-55 kmph were likely to prevail along and off the Orissa coast and sea condition would be rough to very rough.
Junagarh in Kalahandi district, where the Hati river is in high spate, had received the highest rainfall of 33 cm since yesterday.
The district headquarter town of Bhawanipatna experienced 18 cm of rains followed by Ghatagaon in Keonjhar district (16), Kutraguda (15), Naktideul (14), Bissam Cuttack (12), Alipingal and Chandbali (11 each), Umarkote (9), Baliguda (8) and Soro, Telkoi, Jaipatna and Kotagarh (7 each).
Cuttack city, which last week deluged by 43 cm of rainfall over two days, experienced six cm of rainfall since yesterday.
On the other hand, the recent floods in the Suna River due to two days of incessant rainfall has caused a lot of damage at the Joda block. About 500 families in the region have been rendered homeless.
Also, 154 villages in 3 blocks of Anandapur sub-division have been badly affected. More than 4282 hectares of land remain inundated while 3885 hectares of paddy and 297 hectares of non-paddy lands have been destroyed.
