Homes and businesses were evacuated in parts of Tasmania's north-east overnight as flood waters peaked.

About 26 homes in Branxholm near Scottsdale were flooded during the night, but 40 homes were evacuated.

The situation was similar in the nearby town of Derby, with some houses and a business inundated.

There are also reports a bridge has been washed away on the Ringarooma River near Pioneer.

Police Inspector Darren Hopkins says the situation is now easing, but could have been much worse.
