BHADRAK: With incessant rain in upper catchments of river Baitarani in the last four days, water level in the river reached 19.90 metre against the danger mark of 17.83 at Akhuapada on Saturday afternoon.

According to the district administration, this year’s water level was the highest in three decades. Like north Balasore, Bhadrak too is grappling with flood situation, said the District Emergency Officer (DEO) Suryakanta Padhi.

Some embankments of the Baitarani and its tributaries were breached, thousands of acres of cultivated land marooned and several riverside villages inundated, the DEO said.

Dhamnagar and Bhandaripokhari blocks are the worst affected. Residents of Nadigan, Bhatpur and Arjunpur panchayats have been badly affected due to a breach in the embankment of river Kochila.

Communication to most of the villages under Bhandaripokhari block has been disrupted with flood water flowing over the village roads.

Road communication between Aradi and the district headquarters has also been cut off with water flowing over Bhadrak-Aradi road at Kothar and Dhusuri.

District Collector Nalinikanta Burma said though the flood damage was not known yet, over 60,000 people in 11 panchayats had been affected. Seven motor boats and two teams of Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Forces have already been pressed into service. A lakh people have been affected.
