Dam on Baitarani

SJVN probes on Naitwar Mori; Velcan strides in Orissa
09 July 2007 (International Water Power and Dam Construction)

A call for tenders by Indian hydro developer Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) has just closed for site investigation work at the location of the proposed Naitwar More hydro plant in Himachal Pradesh state.

Geotechnical investigations are required at the site of the project's barrage, intake, desilting, headrace tunnel, power house and associated works, the company said.

SJVN is developing the 34.5MW Naitwar Mori project to be commissioned by 2012.

Naitwar Mori is to include: a 41m long barrage capable of taking a design flood of 1500m3/sec; an 80m long by 12m wide by 6m deep desilting chamber; a 5.5km long 5m diameter headrace tunnel leading to a restricted orifice surge shaft 38m deep and 16m wide; a surface power house to take three vertical axis Franci turbines of 11.5MW capacity.

Elsewhere in the active hydro market in India, French energy group Velcan was recently granted two 30-year concessions to develop projects with a combined capacity of 50MW in Orissa state.

Velcan Energy said it planned to develop a pair of 25MW projects on the same river for the 'Baitarani' project and although they would be built 5km apart they will be operated as a single scheme.

The company is proceeding with applications for the necessary authorisations and hopes to start construction in the second quarter of 2009 for commissioning and operations by the end of 2011.

The 'Baitarani' scheme will consist of two dams - Bhimkund and Tarini. It is planned that the hydro plants should be able to generate up to 200GWh per year, and secure 210,000 Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits per annum.

The company is also active in developing hydro power in Brazil. In April, it announced 30-year concessions to develop and operate a total of 74MW of capacity in two plants - the 60MW Rio das Mortes and the 14MW Rodeio Bonito.
