Flood insurance makes UK "unique"

The UK is one of the only countries where flood insurance is widely available on the free market, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), people in other countries usually have to purchase flood insurance policies through government-backed schemes, meaning that the UK currently occupies a "unique" position in the world market.

However, this situation is now under threat after the catastrophic events of the summer and the growing risk of flooding across the country due to increased rainfall, a spokesperson for the organisation stated.

He said: "The UK is pretty much unique in that flood insurance is widely available.
