NKorea's Kim says thanks for flood aid, but not to SKorea

SEOUL (AFP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il has thanked the leaders of 11 countries -- but not neighbouring South Korea -- for their help in flood relief, the communist state's official media reported Tuesday.

"He expressed deep appreciation for their sincere sympathy and warm-hearted comfort," said the Korean Central Broadcasting Station, monitored by Seoul's Yonhap news agency.

South Korea on Monday started shipping new flood aid worth 37.4 billion won (39.8 million dollars) to the North across the heavily fortified frontier to help it rebuild.

This follows emergency food and other aid worth 7.1 billion won which was sent by the South last month.

The North has reported about 600 people dead or missing, hundreds of thousands homeless and 11 percent of the grain harvest lost due to floods last month.

It says factories, mines, roads and railways were damaged or destroyed across six provinces.

Thailand, Vietnam and Qatar were among those countries that gave international assistance.
