Water bill passes federal parliament

The revised version of the federal government's $10 billion plan to take over management of Australia's food bowl will go ahead, after passing federal parliament.

The senate, during an extended Friday sitting, voted in favour of the scheme to revive the Murray-Darling Basin by upgrading irrigation infrastructure and stopping the over-allocation of water.

The move clears the way for Canberra to negotiate a referral of powers by the four Murray-Darling states through an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) considered critical to the plan.
