Flood situation grim in Orissa districts

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 21 (PTI): The overall flood situation in Orissa remained alarming today as a school boy was washed away in Mayurbhanj district while rising rivers inundated 881 villages in neighbouring Balasore.

Officials said three school students including a girl were washed away by swirling waters while crossing a flooded road near Gangajodi under Badasahi block of Mayurbhanj. While the girl and one of the boys were rescued, the body of Sabin Kumar Sahu was retrieved later.

Reports said Bhograi, Basta, Baliapal and Jaleswar blocks in Balasore were submerged by Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Jalaka rivers following heavy rains in their catchment.

While the Subarnarekha was flowing well above its danger mark at Rajghat, the Jalaka and Budhabalanga were receding trend.

Over eight lakh people in the four blocks have been affected by the floods which have cut off communication on the Basta-Baliapal and Bhograi-Chandaneswar Roads.
