State officials are nearing the end of a five-year effort to determine how much water Pennsylvania has and whether there will be enough in the future.

The Department of Environmental Protection began work in 2003 on a new state water plan, which has not been updated since the late 1970s, and the new plan is due in March.

Water resources are drawing renewed attention after most of the state, including Franklin County, was put on a drought watch on Aug. 6. It marked the second straight year the area was put on a drought watch, which asks residents to voluntarily reduce their water use by 5 percent
