Flash Flood Hits North Orissa, One Killed

Sunday 19th of August 2007
With heavy rain lashing northern Orissa for the past two days, three districts Sunday faced the fourth round of floods of the season, killing at least one person, officials said.

The situation could worsen in Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts as the metrological office here predicted more rain in the state over the next 24 hours to Monday evening.

'Balasore district has been badly hit in the latest flood. Its two northern blocks of Bhogarai and Baliapal - being cut off from the district headquarters as floodwaters of the Subarnarekha and Jalaka ran over all connecting roads to the region,' District Collector A.C. Padhiary told IANS.

Both rivers were flowing above the danger mark throughout the day.

The district, which has three major rivers, has been battling with flood conditions since the first week July.
