Flood scene in Bihar, UP grim; nine more die

New Delhi, Aug. 19 (PTI): Incessant rains continued to wreak havoc in several parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and West Bengal with nine more deaths reported today.

The overall flood situation in Bihar remained grim with major rivers still flowing above the danger mark even as the death toll in the current spell mounted to 325, with seven more people reported dead since yesterday.

The situation worsened following heavy rains in the catchment areas of several rivers, including the Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, Kosi, Adhwara group of rivers and Gandak.

Around 1.58 crore people have been affected by the floods in 7,972 villages spread over 210 blocks in 20 districts of Bihar.

On the other hand, the weathermen have predicted heavy rains and thundershowers at most places in Orissa due to a low pressure area formed over north Bay of Bengal.
