Worst-ever flood? Joking

PATNA: Facts belie the statement issued by the United Nations that this year's flood is the worst in the living memory. At least in Bihar, which is arguably the worst sufferer. Clearly, it seems to be a case of short memory.


In the 2004 floods, 2.13 crore people of 9,346 villages under 20 districts of Bihar spread over an area of 27.72 lakh hectares of land suffered the fury of floods that killed 885 persons and ruined 9,29,773 houses.

In 1987, when the rest of the country was reeling under the worst drought of the century, 46.68 lakh hectares of land in Bihar remained submerged under water (exclusive of the area that has gone to Jharkhand now) while crops planted over 25.10 lakh hectares of land got destroyed
