Plans for Milford breakwater get the go-ahead

A million-dollar upgrade of Freshwater Basin in Milford Sound for safety reasons has been given the green light by Environment Southland.

However, the project still faces several hurdles before it can get under way.

The regional council's consents committee last month heard the application from the Milford Sound Development Authority to relocate the breakwater at Freshwater Basin, the base of cruise operators in the sound, for safety concerns and to exclusively occupy the area to expand tourism activities. The authority was established to handle the redevelopment and operation of tourism infrastructure assets in the sound.
