Heavy rains lash Orissa, Cuttack marooned

Bhubaneswar, Aug. 6 (PTI): As heavy rains continued to lash most parts of Orissa, nearly 50,000 people remained marooned in Cuttack city for the second consecutive day today.

Revenue Minister Manmohan Samal, who along with Urban Development Minister K V Singhdeo, went to Cuttack to review the 'grim' situation there, told reporters that the city had received as much as 43.7 cm of rainfall since Saturday.

"This is the highest rainfall in Cuttack in last 40 years," Samal said adding the rains had wiped away the spectare of drought in several districts.

Official sources said while a total of about three lakh people in Cuttack were severely affected in the flood triggered by heavy rains, 3146 persons living in low-lying areas were shifted to safe places.
